About

Hi. My name’s Matt Henderson, and I’m a thirty-somethings (Uh, 40 year old, boo hoo) guy living with my wife and kids in Marbella, Spain.

I grew up in Duluth, Georgia, and studied electrical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. A Spanish girlfriend and general interest in Europe led me to do my graduate work at Georgia Tech’s European campus in Metz, France. After that, I went on to work as a communications engineer at the European Space Agency (ESA) in Darmstadt, Germany.

Since 1997, I’ve founded and continue to run two companies. The first is a technology company called MakaluMedia, with offices in Germany and Spain, providing software engineering, design and communications services. The second, started in partnership with my brother, is Henderson & Henderson, LLC, a builder of residential homes (in particular, lake homes) in north Georgia, USA.

Technically, my main interests are in the areas of user interfaces and usability. Although by no means a designer myself, I have a tremendous appreciation for the role that design plays in successful systems and products. I also enjoy studying about software development processes and methodologies, and business management — especially since those are so critical to the success of a company like MakaluMedia.

In addition to family life, my non-professional interests include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art I’ve practiced for about eight years now (I’m currently a brown-belt), cycling (both road and mountain bikes), most outdoor activities and, well, getting to know and experience different places and cultures. I particularly love hanging out with friends and family in the local cafes and terraces, enjoying the streetside lifestyle of southern Spain.

I’ve been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel extensively, become fluent in a second language, and live abroad. I think all young people should be encouraged, around the age of say 20, to live one or two years outside their home country. This is an area in which I hope to spend some time and effort working, at some point in the future. It’s amazing the perspective one gains (and humour to be found!) from not just experiencing, but emersion within other cultures.

I hope you enjoy the weblog, which for me serves as a place to jot down from time to time thoughts and ponderings that may be interesting to others. If you have any comments, I’d be happy to hear from you.
