December 14, 2007 was a really big day for me, as I was awarded the brown belt by my brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher, Edson Jorge (of Gracie-Barra). There’s only five belts in BJJ — white, blue, purple, brown and black — so I’m only one step away from the BIG ONE. By no means do I feel like a brown belt (especially since I seem to sometimes still forget some of the very basics), so it’s going to take some getting used to I guess! In theory the brown belt represents the bridge between purple and black, where the student needs to focus on leading and teaching, so those’ll be my objectives this coming year.
On the same day I got mine, my long-time training buddy Mike Rios also got his brown belt. So all in all, it was a very special day!

Matt,
Congrats! While the only brown belt I have is one that holds my Levi’s up I can relate a bit to your accomplishment. My oldest just tested for his Green Belt (in a discipline I can’t remember the name of right now) the day before we left the US to spend another 3 months in Russia. It was something he’d worked for and planned on for about 5 months. He practiced when he did not feel like it, he overcame sickness and frustration, and he got the reward at the end though he says he enjoyed the journey at least as much as the destination. What wisdom from a 9 year old, eh?
Anyway, as a proud dad it brought me great joy to see him press through all the obstacles in front of him to arrive at his goal. Like you, he remains humble and says there is so much he can still improve on.
All of that to say “congrats!”
Hope you are well, Rob
P.S. I’ve reconnected recently with Mike West and John Kodatt. If you care to, email me. I’ll send you their email addresses.
Thanks everybody! :)
Congratulations Matt! Now you need to get a brown belt in Rex-Kwan-Do! :-)
That is awesome! Congratulations on the promotion!!
Congratulations! Matt
